What's in the Hole?
Know the breed before you take the pup!
Think about a Golden Retriever or a Cocker Spaniel who encounters a deep, dark, claustrophobic hole. At the bottom is a seething, raging, red-eyed, salivating, snarling creature. Most dogs might say to themselves,"Oooooh, I bet this 'person' doesn't want me here." And after a cautious investigation, the dog will leave. But most terriers, even at a very young age -- every one, to a "man" -- say:
"BONSAI !!!!! I'M COMING IN!!!!!!"
Their little eyes are shining with anticipation and their tails are wagging with joy, because the possibility of a truly awesome rumble -- all-out-to-the-death, hand-to-hand combat in close claustrophobic quarters -- is in the offing.
It's not so much that what they do that's frightening, but that they are truly happiest and most alive when they are doing this. This analogy alone should prevent anyone from wanting a go-to-ground terrier. However, there are some of us who like this living-on-the-edge feeling. And so, like idiots, we choose small, fierce, yet cheerful, monsters dressed in dog suits for our pets.
Are you sure the Jack Russell is the breed for you?!

Whelped May 16, 2010
Two black and white males, Axel and Blackjack (already nicknamed BJ), and Alice, a petite tan and white female, out of Sweetgrass Poppy (12.5") and Sweetgrass Firecracker (12"). All three have dense coats which are developing a nice harsh quality; Axel and BJ look like they will be rough coat, while Alice appears to be lightly broken. Axel is laid back for a JR, with a sweet, waggy-tail personality. He focuses intently on his people and works to make eye contact with them; he is a terrific candidate for obedience or a first time JR owner. Sitting for his supper comes automatically to this handsome little guy.
Alice is a pretty, bouncy, happy-go-lucky girl who prefers to hop and prance over walking (we call her "my little pony"). She can run like the wind, and is a very athletic little girl, already competing with her mother to race for the ball. She has a carefree, upbeat personality combined nicely with an intense, competitive attitude.
BJ is alert, funny, assertive and verbal, with a distinctive growly vocabulary, which has been likened to both an Ewok and to the ant in "Honey I Shrunk the Kids." He is typical alpha male JR on one side and tender, loving puppy on the other. BJ is a very smart boy who notices everything, is the first to explore new territory and ideas, and loves water.
First shots, wormed. Raised in a home environment, with tons of special attention, socialized to many diverse people and situations, including chickens, loud noises and kids. They are well on the way to being housebroken, and already sit on command for treats! Now interviewing prospective forever homes. Mama on site at Sweetlife Farm on Bainbridge, daddy at Sweetgrass Farm; more pictures on Sweetlife Farm Facebook page $700.
